Today was a glorious day of peace for the Denubian Galaxy. It was time to celebrate its nascent liberation from the terrible Dhm Empire, which had crumbled before the might of Voltron. Voltron, Defender of the Universe, had succeeded in defeating King Zarkon and Prince Lotor.

Since that fateful battle was won, the Galaxy Alliance sent troops to aid the recently created Denubian Alliance in peacekeeping the Planet Dhm. The various Dhmk races were split into their racial factions and had begun rebelling against their conquerors, a tactic not used since Zarkon had assumed the throne. It seemed the only world in the galaxy where violence was still rampant; the other planets reveled in their hard-earned victory.

Planet Arus celebrated most. It had already been a ravaged planet at the hands of Zarkon before Voltron was awakened. Once back in commission, the invincible robot, with the help of five space explorers and the Princess herself, fought on behalf of all the Arusian people, nay, the Denubian people. After countless attacks on Arus, including brutal machinations that invoked the Omega Comet to hit the planet, the Goddess finally granted all of them the triumph and the happiness in no longer having to fight to survive.

Now they could all begin to live, even if things would never return to the way they were before. Many planets eagerly awaited the return of citizens that had been enslaved by Dhm. Families clutched on to the hope that their loved ones would return to them intact, that their fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters would still be alive and be able to laugh and smile once they were home again. There were many joyous reunions and painful funerals.

Planet Arus would always have a reminder of how it had nearly been smashed out of existence: the Omega Comet had approached the orbit of Arus so close that there were permanent fault lines in her crust, and the orbit of her moon had been forever changed. It now had a 37-day cycle as opposed to its former 30-day journey, for the path it now followed was longer and more elliptical. The oceans and tides were already affected. Arusian astrologers pondered how to reinterpret the moon’s influence on the zodiac. Having the opportunity to rectify such inane things was the greatest feeling of all for the people. The petty problems of a normal life would be a welcome change of pace.

Near the Castle of Lions, an enthusiastic crowd basked before Voltron. Its awe inspired them. It had provided the means to grant Arus a new Golden Age after its recovery.

A young man had come to see the powerful robot with his father. He saw the Royal Advisor, Coran, but neither the princess, nor the heroic pilots were around.

“I thought the Voltron Force would be here,” he said to his father with a hint of disappointment. It would have been a treat and a privilege to see his saviors in the flesh.

“I want to see Keith!” confided a young lady to her best friend nearby. In the beginning of Voltron’s crusade, Dhm had sent a destructive rain of fire to burn the planet. Her little brother had been trapped under debris from her house that had burned down. It was Keith, in his Black Lion, who had heard her brother’s cries and freed him from his tomb. A thank you kiss from her would not be much, she knew, but it would at least show him her personal gratitude.

Coran had just finished an introductory speech about how the day Dhm fell would be commemorated in the Galaxy’s first annual Independence Day. He was about to introduce the Voltron Force and Her Highness until he realized that they were nowhere to be found. He did see the four space mice out of the corner of his eye, though.

“Cheesy, do you know where they are?” he asked the patriarch.

Cheesy turned to discuss the means of communicating the classified information with his family. The decision was quick; each mouse feigned a sigh and fell to the ground in a relaxing swoon.

“They’re taking a nap?!” Coran deciphered incredulously. ‘To be young again,’ he thought. ‘At least now, Arus’s children can be young.’

Keith stretched his arms out.

“Ahh, this is great,” he sighed. Allura, Lance, Hunk, and Pidge were lying in the meadow. He realized that they were all supposed to be at the ceremony, but his friends were so happy being here, it seemed reward enough for them all. “Peace at last,” he added.

Allura brandished a delicate pink flower with smooth petals. “Beautiful,” she agreed. Her quest was truly beginning. She had helped in freeing her people from evil’s grasp; now began the tireless task of nurturing them. It was a job she was willing to perform until she perished. On this day of independence, when everyone was to simply appreciate their newfound joy, being here in the meadow with her true friends...with Keith...was enough for her.

“You gotta know that Hunk is relaxed now,” Lance quipped with some good-natured sarcasm.

Hunk had fallen sound asleep to the left of him, and was snoring up a storm.  ‘After that banquet at the castle with countless turkeys to eat, it’s no surprise he went out like a light,’ Lance smirked. He had stuffed himself so much he found that he himself had dozed off more than once.

He even began napping again when he heard Pidge add, “He’s really loose.”

“This the life,” Keith said out loud to no one specifically, “but for how long?” He knew that all four of them would soon be ordered by the Galaxy Alliance to go where they were needed. Even Sven would be assigned again once he healed. Keith closed his eyes as he thought if he had asked them, they would all agree where they felt they were needed most.

“Now that there’s peace in the Universe, I guess the Galaxy Alliance will be sending us out on assignments someplace else,” Pidge announced to everyone what they already knew.

Allura closed her eyes. She did not want to think about that day when they would all have to leave her. A gentle breeze plucked the petals off of her flower.

“Hey, maybe they’ll call us back to join the rest of the Voltron Force,” Pidge alluded to the Vehicle Voltron Force that had been battling the imperial forces of the Drule Empire for colonization rights. “I’ll get to see my brother, Chip, again,” he eagerly spoke. He began to feel the effects of the turkey’s tryptophan as he said, “I’m gonna write him a space letter right away...” ‘...right after I wake up...,’ he managed to think before he indulged in a nap.

The petals swirled around the heroes as they all experienced the calm that had eluded Arus for so long. It provided a delicate flowery scent that lulled them into dreams of peace and prosperity for all.
