Season One, Episode Thirty Eight - “Raid of the Red Berets”
Doom Log
File Title: “Prince Lotor’s Red Berets”
Summary:
Displeased with Lotor and Haggar’s failures, Zarkon tells Lotor he’s fed up with
them using magic and robots to attack Voltron. Lotor tells him he and Haggar
have some new and improved fighters, the red berets, and he manages to convince
Zarkon to watch them in the arena. At first he doesn’t expect much, but when he
sees them in the arena he agrees that they have potential.
Fighting Frenchman, who knew?
As a bonus Lotor
arms them with something from Arus, presumably more powerful than the BS
(Cossack’s note: More powerful than Voltron’s BS? Now that I gotta see.) and
sends them on their way. They land on Arus in the middle of the night and run
off to wreak havoc. The next day the red berets attack some citizens, and the
Voltron Force goes to investigate, but the people of Arus aren’t satisfied by
that and they storm the castle blaming Princess Allura for it. They send out
the lions in a show to try to boost the citizens’ morale, and the crowd calms
down and disburses just when the red berets show up. They use lava dust against
the lions, causing the black lion to freeze up, and Lotor’s robeast attacks.
I
asked Hagar how and why a completely mechanical beast salivates, but she just
looked at me and pet her cat. Yeah, no good reason for that bell-and-whistle,
huh, old witch? How many trillions did that feature cost me?
The lions without Keith get their asses whooped, so they take the chance of
concentrating all their fire on the black lion to melt the lava around him and
set him free. They form Voltron and take the robeast out with a lion head
attack and the BS. Throwing Black Lion
into the robeast was a new strategy my checkbook could have done without.
Notable
Doom Highlights: Most of the action took place on Arus, but Zarkon and
Lotor’s father-son talks in the beginning of the episode is royal family fun,
right down to Zarkon’s colorful assessment of Lotor and Haggar’s previous
robeasts. The truth hurts sometimes,
especially when a pathological liar like myself has to state it.
Notes:
The GA leads you to believe that red berets are robots that look “almost human”
by splicing in a voice like Lotor’s in their footage saying that, but nope.
Actually the red berets were hired flesh and blood assassins. They also don’t
want to let their people know that the red berets iced a bunch of Arusians, and
had Allura state that they were instead “scared away.” Uh huh. You might say
they were “scared to death.” Yeah, a blade
in the ball sack will do that to ya, mwhahaha!
