Thoughts, Musings, and Other Stuff on the Thundercats

Thundercats! One of the best cartoons of the 80s. If you don't think so, then get off my page!  In all seriousness, though, I think it says something about how good a show is when so many years after its original airing, so many people still have "fond memories" of it.  Now that it's been aired on Cartoon Network for a few runs in recent years and been released on DVD, new fans have been drawn to it, some who grew up with it were re-introduced to it, and some of us who grew up with it and now have kids of our own have gotten members of the next generation into it!

Why did this particular show stick with me so much?  Well firstly, because it was lots of fun!  Although it's got some (okay, plenty) of corny elements and some inconsistencies, it's got a rich universe, interesting characters with neat powers, and unlike other shows, doesn't really seem all that dated to watch it even 20-some years after its original airing.  It had excellent animation and while it had some preachy moments, it generally didn't bludgeon you over the head with the "moral" like other shows of the era. (Remember Loo-kee's lessons at the end of She-Ra?).

Although I originally watched Thundercats as a child and enjoyed it then, I re-watched it as an adult and still found it entertaining, although for different reasons.  As a kid I liked it because it had cool-looking characters and exciting stories that were both fun to watch and act out/play out with friends. As an adult I found it entertaining and got a charge out of the funny lines and the subtext.  (Yes, there is subtext, and more than a few suggestive lines, whether intended or not!)  Though the show had its silly episodes, it also had some with enough depth that someone older than age twelve could still enjoy it.
