Origin of Evil

Chapter
Five: The Supernova
The urgent message from the Book of Creation had not left
Osiris with much of an idea as to how to deal with the apparent evil force
inside the Citadel. He did not want to consider them but Isis’s earlier
warnings were getting to him. Could there be a chance that whatever was
happening was connected to Menas? Before he had any time to consider that
thought another struck him abruptly.
“Isis, the children, the others! They may be in danger. I
must find them before they come to any harm; protect them at any cost. It is my
sacred duty.”
He ran, faster than ever, in the direction of his
children’s bedchamber, his heart thumping and his body trembling with a mixture
of apprehension and anger. Osiris was used to having control over a situation.
He felt helpless and useless in the presence of an enemy that he could not name
or see. He felt a little relieved when he saw the door to the children’s room
in the distance.
“Thank the Book of Creation,” he said, panting all the
while. “At least this area looks quiet enough. I’ll quickly check on Horus and
Iras first and then try to find the others. If we can root out this intruder
then my mind will be at rest.”
He went forward to open the door. It would not move an
inch. Osiris’s insides began to fill rapidly with sickening dread.
“What in great Ra! I’ve had enough of these setbacks!”
He tried the door again to see if he was imagining things.
He wasn’t. The door was firmly shut and seemed to be jammed in some way. His
temper began to rise and he beat his fists against the door.
“Whoever you are open this door now! If you dare to touch
my children! Holy Ra!”
He raised his hands and let loose all the power he could
concentrate in one go. The energy hit the door and rebounded in his direction.
He had to jump out of the way to avoid being blasted with his own magic. He
stood amazed at the outcome.
“This is serious. That was my most powerful attack.
Whatever this dark sorcery is it is more powerful than my magic. But I can’t
leave the children at the mercy of whatever is in there.”
He glanced about in fear. There really was nothing he could
do at present despite the situation. He hated to admit it but ingenuity was not
one of his best qualities. Out of his siblings two possessed that quality in
abundance. Thoth and…
“Menas!”
He raced off, the destination completely unknown. One
thought was on his mind. He had to get to the others and save his children
before something terrible happened again. Charmian’s condition still played
heavily on his mind and he vowed revenge against whoever was responsible.
In another part of the Citadel, Thoth and Anubis were
thinking along the same lines. They had been franticly searching for Osiris,
still carrying their comatose sisters all the while.
“We’ve got to find Osiris,” cried Anubis, trying to hide
his fear. “He’ll know what to do. He’ll put a stop to this.”
“Have you noticed the marks on Charmian’s neck?” enquired
Thoth.
“No I hadn’t,” he said, looking at her neck with a frown.
“She looks like she’s been bitten.”
The brothers looked at each other and raised their eyebrows
in acknowledgement. They both knew the answer to that little mystery. Still
they continued, quickening their pace, despite the extra weight of their
unconscious sisters.
“There is something very strange going on here,” said
Thoth, seriously.
“Is that your idea of a joke!” shouted Anubis, irritably.
“No. I mean that apart from Osiris, two people are nowhere
to be seen.”
“Menas and Armon. But where do you think they are?”
“Well I’m here brother,” said a quiet familiar voice.
Thoth and Anubis looked up to see a figure walking calmly
towards them. As the figure moved closer they recognised it as Armon. The
brothers rested Isis and Charmian at the side of the corridor and slowly walked
towards him.
“Brother, where have you been?” asked Anubis. “Do you even
know what is happening here? Have you seen what has befallen our sisters?”
“Oh yes, I know all right,” he laughed as Thoth glared at
him. “And that is all you need to know.”
With that Armon let loose a charge of energy at Anubis. It
hit him in the stomach, winding him badly. He wrenched about on the floor,
yelling in pain.
“You little wretch!” shouted Thoth, advancing on Armon.
“You’ll pay for that.”
“Oh, I don’t think so Thoth. You are injudicious to lower
your defences. You don’t know what might be behind you as we converse.”
Thoth suddenly felt something cold and hard clamp around
his waist. He desperately tried to move but could not. He turned his head to
see the hideous eyes of Noxious staring into his. He was in between its fangs.
He cried out for help but there was no one to hear him. Charmian and Isis were
unconscious and Anubis was still stunned from Armon’s surprise attack. Thoth
hung his head desperately. It felt as if all hope was gone.
“And now you die,” stated Armon. “Send my regards to our
dear father in the Duat. I’m sure you have much to discuss. You always had a
lot to say about everything Thoth. Now you can prattle for all eternity.”
He let out a peal of cruel laughter at his final remark and
began to move towards the weakened body of Anubis.
“Time for you to meet our father you fool,” chuckled Armon,
looking down at Anubis. “You always were a coward. Our father will once again
put you in the place you belong.”
“You will be the first one meet him!” shouted an
authoritative voice.
Armon wheeled around to be hit in the forehead by a blast
of super white energy. He collapsed on the floor. Before he lost consciousness
he looked up to see who his new adversary was.
“Osiris!” he stammered before his head hit the ground.
Osiris then looked up and was at first taken aback by the
sheer size of Noxious. He then noticed Thoth clinging for life in its monstrous
jaws. He put his apprehension to one side and gathered all his strength into
one mighty ball of light, which he discharged at the serpent. When it hit the
snake it let out a piercing scream and dropped Thoth from its fangs. It then
retreated westwards and out of sight. Osiris ran towards his brother to help
him up.
“Thoth! Can you hear me?”
“Osiris. Thank Ra,” said Thoth, clearly in much pain. “We
are in serious trouble here.”
“Yes. Once again I fear I am mistaken. I felt that this was
Menas’s doing but the traitor turned out to be Armon. Wonders will never cease.
Have you seen Menas this night? I cannot find him anywhere.”
“No my lord. I do not know where he is.”
All of a sudden Osiris noticed the bodies of his wife and
siblings. He was well aware of Charmian’s fatal state but he did not understand
why Isis and Anubis also lay motionless on the hallway floor.
“Isis! What happened here?”
“Anubis and I discovered Isis lying in one of the hallways
and then later we found Charmian unconscious in her chamber. Armon stunned
Anubis but he will be all right. Armon has limited powers as we have seen.”
“We’d better put these three in a safe place where they can
recuperate. Then put Armon somewhere where he cannot escape and cause more
trouble.”
Osiris and Thoth picked up the bodies of Isis and Charmian
and put them to rest in a nearby chamber. They did the same with Anubis, who
was still slightly cognisant but hardly in a stable condition. Then they
carried the body of their once trustworthy younger brother and placed him in
the opposite chamber. Once Armon was in the side room Osiris closed the door
and began to weld it shut with his powers.
“That should keep him out of the way while we get to the
bottom of this situation. From what I can see we must locate the serpent,
whatever the vile thing was, and find Menas, if we can. For all we know he may
be in danger.”
“That serpent, as you refer to it, was the Asp of
Darkness.”
Osiris looked suitably startled. Thoth gazed at him
carefully. He watched as the poor King was struck with the awful truth.
“How can it be?” said Osiris. “Menas defeated it. He saved
Seraphina. He…”
“Was lying,” finished Thoth as Osiris grasped his head with
his hands and released an almighty cry of frustration and despair.
“I trusted him Thoth. I really thought that he was telling
the truth. I’ve been such a fool. He must be behind all this, and what’s more,
he’s enlisted that little traitor, Armon, to his cause, whatever that is.”
“He was always jealous of your supreme power Osiris, even
though it was your destiny. He could never admit to it in your presence. I
believe that he has been biding his time and is now ready to exact his revenge.
Menas is very resourceful and extremely tenacious.”
“Revenge for what?” stammered Osiris. “Might it possibly be
the fact that I am King and he is not? I would have thought Menas above such a
childish notion.”
“I would not have. Menas is an ungrateful self-serving
fiend and I have always known it.”
“And now he has the assistance of Asp of Darkness,”
continued Osiris.
“It seems so. How he ever tamed such a creature confounds
me. There is certainly more to this than we see on the surface. We must act
fast.”
“The voice of wisdom as always Thoth. Yes, you are probably
right. I am only upset that it had to be this way. Our poor Charmian.”
As the brothers were sadly reflecting on the state of
affairs they failed to notice something large creep up slowly behind them until
it was extremely close.
“The Asp retreated when I attacked it,” said Osiris. “I
thought it would have put up more of a fight.”
“Where did that repulsive creature disappear to anyway?”
asked Thoth.
His question was answered when he found himself, once
again, between the jaws of the horrible giant snake. Osiris leapt back and
discharged another round of intense energy at the beast. It screeched with pain
and hurled Thoth in the opposite direction. It then arched its head and focused
on Osiris.
“So we finally meet, face to face, King Osiris,” said
Noxious. “You are all that stands between my lord Menas and his destiny. I will
make sure that he succeeds.”
“You can speak! What manner of being are you?”
“I am Noxious, the great double-headed black serpent of the
Demon Realm, servant to the Archmage Rosencrantz and the Dread Lord Menas.
However, in this world, you know me as the Asp of Darkness. I look forward to
making you my very next victim, even though Menas wished to destroy you
himself.”
Noxious suddenly lunged at Osiris and picked him up with
his fangs. Osiris was startled but tried to focus his powers. However, in the
position he was in he could not move his arms. He could not muster up the
strength he needed for an effective attack.
Noxious’s other head curled around until it was inches away
from Osiris’s face. It released a horrible contemptuous laugh.
“Where to now your majesty?”
Osiris struggled and thrashed about but could not move. He
heard footsteps running towards them from somewhere.
“Set him down Asp!” shouted Thoth from behind.
He then began to shoot continuous blasts of energy at
Noxious. Noxious seemed unaffected and his free head moved towards Thoth.
“I tire of you fool,” said Noxious. “You will learn that it
is most unwise to interfere in my business.”
Noxious reared its head up and sank its jaws into Thoth’s
side. He collapsed on the floor writhing in severe agony.
“No!” yelled Osiris.
The King tried his hardest to move himself out of the
deadly jaws. The serpent’s warm pungent breath and glutinous saliva was all
over him. If he were to succumb to anything it would be the terrible smell more
than any physical pain. Thoth had eventually surrendered to the pain and had
fainted. As before, the second head moved back to face Osiris. It produced what
Osiris would have regarded as a sarcastic smile, but the King was by no means
in a position to linger on such random contemplation.
“And now it is your turn to feel my wrath your highness.”
The fangs around Osiris loosened but they did not give him
enough time to act. They then shut tightly digging deep into Osiris’s flesh. A
sharp painful sensation ran through his body, followed by a cool numbness. The
pain was intolerable and he cried out in anguish. He could hear Noxious laughing
his deep man-like laugh all the while. He began to feel faint. With what was
left of his strength, he pulled his arms out of the grip of the Asp’s locked
jaws and tried to summon his powers. He did not have the force to attack and he
fell back, limp and defenceless. All hope seemed to have vanished. His eyes
were slowly closing as his last resistance to Noxious’s evil force declined.
“Courage my lord,” resounded a distant composed voice.
“Have courage. Never give up. While I am here to protect you, you will never be
defeated.”
Out of the corner of his wavering eye, Osiris saw a long,
luminous white sword, flying through the air in the direction of the Asp’s
body. The sword reached Noxious and penetrated deep into his jade sinew. With a
scream that caused the foundations of the White Citadel to shake, Noxious began
to glow as white as the sword. Osiris was suddenly dropped to the ground where
he looked up in amazement. Noxious was glowing brighter and brighter until,
with a final shriek, he exploded in a burst of dazzling light, sending sparks
everywhere and a stench that would not be forgotten quickly.
Osiris collapsed. He could no longer stop the Asp’s deadly
venom from working its malevolence upon him. In a final desperate effort he
extended his arm as if reaching out to something, anything to help him. The
glowing sword flew towards Osiris’s hand. When he grasped the hilt of the blade
he felt his body jolt, as if he had been given new life. All the pain in his
body disappeared and he felt whole again, though still very weak. He stood up
and marvelled at the sword in his hand.
“This sword saved my life. I have never seen such a blade
before. Where did this come from?”
“The answer is simple, my lord,” spoke a familiar voice
from the very sword itself.
“What are you?” exclaimed the stunned King.
“You know this voice. It is I, the Book of Creation. When
my master is at his most vulnerable I become a weapon so benevolent that it has
the power to crush all evil. When I am in this form, I am known as the
Supernova.”
Osiris shook his head in amazement. Truly the Book of
Creation was a marvel beyond the imagination of the brightest intellect. But
all the while a nagging thought was rearing its head up, trying to warn Osiris
of urgent things to be done.
“What about the others? Can they be saved?”
“Quickly now. Use the Supernova to heal your brother.”
Without hesitating, Osiris pointed the white weapon at
Thoth’s crumpled body and bright light emitted from the blade, which surrounded
Thoth like a comforting shield. Within seconds Thoth stood up and gazed at his
brother in astonishment.
“What is that which you hold in your hand and has saved
me?” asked Thoth, staring in wonder at the Supernova.
“This is the Supernova, the alternate form of the Book of
Creation and the ultimate weapon of justice. This blade has destroyed the Asp
of Darkness for us.”
“You must now drive out the source of evil in the citadel,”
ordered the sword, suddenly. “ It lies in wait near your children as we speak.”
“Menas! He must be stopped,” declared Osiris. “Thoth, I
want you to stay with Isis, Charmian and Anubis. I will confront Menas myself.”
“But Charmian was also bitten by the Asp,” Thoth said,
worriedly. “Can she be saved as well?”
“You must save her,” Osiris commanded the wondrous sword.
“Unfortunately, she has been under the influence of that
deadly poison for too long,” said the Supernova. “She is dying and my powers
cannot save her. I can, however, rid us of the person behind her ill-fated
destiny. But you must hurry before they harm your children.”
Thoth hung his head in despair and walked into the chamber
where he and Osiris had left the unconscious bodies of their sisters and the
wounded Anubis.
“Menas will pay for this. And Charmian loved him so much.
This is the ultimate betrayal. I will not rest until he faces judgement.”
Osiris gripped the handle of the sword and raced off in the
direction of his children’s bedchamber, ready to flush out Menas and his filth
once and for all.
Menas, in the meantime, had been growing increasingly
impatient. He paced about inside his niece and nephew’s bedchamber, forever
watching the door he had magically sealed. Although he never considered failure
a possibility with his plan he could not deny the perpetual bursts of anxiety
that were frequenting his mind. He was worried that they might even be well
founded.
“What could possibly be taking so long? I ordered Noxious
and Armon to destroy the others, save Osiris. That fool tried to break my magic
seal. What a pleasure it was to hear that my brother’s most potent attack could
not match the power of the Dark Destiny. He will soon feel its blade.”
Then he was instantly knocked over by a powerful trembling
that reverberated around the Citadel. The force had been accompanied by an
ear-shattering shriek. Horus and Iras had awoken and were crying loudly. Menas
had recognized the terrible shriek only too well.
“Noxious! It sounds like he is in pain. What is going on
now?” he cried, as he raised the Dark Destiny and spoke. “Show me what has
transpired in these last few moments. What has befallen the workings of my
master plan?”
The blade began to glow bright red and then images appeared
along it. Menas saw Armon attacking Anubis, followed by Osiris stunning Armon,
then a little later on Osiris struggling in the jaws of Noxious. Menas watched
the events unfold and he clenched his fists with rage.
“Osiris has destroyed him with this wretched new sword of
his!” he yelled in both frustration and dismay. “I told that snake to leave
Osiris to me!”
The images on the blade now revealed Osiris racing with all
his might in the direction of Menas’s very location.
“Let him come then. I swear I will destroy him for this
indignity! I await you Osiris. Come and face me if you dare!”
“I accept your challenge. Open this door Menas,” said
Osiris suddenly and calmly from behind the sealed entrance. “Surrender now and
I will not hurt you. Resist and I will surely crush you, as you crushed
Charmian.”
“And how will you get past my blockade, brother?” sneered
Menas. “All mouth and no magic.”
As a response to that remark the door burst open in blast
of intense light. Menas cried out and shielded his eyes. When he moved his
hands away from his face he saw Osiris standing over him. The King of the
Spirit World was glaring and the blade of the Supernova was pointing directly
at him.
“It is over Menas. Drop your weapon and stand aside. You
must face judgement for your unspeakable crimes.”
“Never!”
Menas thrust the Dark Destiny against the Supernova with
all his might. There was a tremendous crash as blade reacted with blade,
darkness met light. The brothers were violently hurled in opposite directions.
They then got up and a fierce battle ensued, both attacking each other with all
the strength and hate they felt for one another. Osiris began to back off into
the hallway, deliberately, so that they would be safely away from the children.
“Retreating are you coward?” laughed Menas. “Not brave
enough to face me?”
“No. I was just wondering how you can stand up without the
use of your legs?”
Menas looked irately confused. Osiris took his chance and
discharged a bolt of energy at Menas while he was off his guard. He collapsed
in pain. Osiris then advanced on him with the Supernova. As he got close, Menas
released a surge of red energy from the Dark Destiny, which flung Osiris
backwards. Menas was on to him in a flash, this time not bothering to use
magic, just pure aggression. The two wrestled on the floor for a few minutes,
neither giving nor gaining any ground. Finally Osiris threw the heated wretch
off himself.
“There is no point to this Menas,” stammered Osiris,
panting heavily. “You must give in. It is the only way.”
“And loose my chance at becoming the King of the Spirit
World? Are you mad? I will not rest until you are destroyed!”
“I was ordained the King!” shouted Osiris, furious with the
outrageous challenge. “The Book of Creation gave me my sole responsibility. It
was my destiny as the oldest. What gives you the right to question the Book’s
benign lore?
“I wanted us all to share the Book’s power,” continued
Menas. “I wanted unity. But you had to take it all for yourself, the egocentric
dog that you are!”
“It was the proclamation of the Book of Creation. It was
meant to be this way. I was not in a position to argue with such wisdom, the
wisdom that created and sustained an entire Universe for eons before our father
arrived and usurped its mighty power!”
“Enough of your fine words Osiris,” said Menas. “The Book
of Creation shall be destroyed. That is, after I have finished with you.”
Menas then began a fast and furious assault. Bolt after
bolt of energy left the Dark Destiny in the direction of Osiris. Osiris stopped
all of them with the Supernova’s blade and then let loose his sword’s power at
Menas. When the energy bolt from the Supernova struck the Dark Destiny it
glowed white and Menas dropped the sword, crying out in pain.
“It’s white hot! What did you do?”
“The power of the Supernova exceeds all other powers. You
have no chance.”
“Maybe, but if I cannot defeat you I will still destroy the
others.”
Menas picked up the Dark Destiny, which had meanwhile
cooled down, and dematerialised in a cloud of purple smoke. Osiris looked
around frantically. He had gone but he knew where he was headed. Osiris raced
towards the corridor where he had left Thoth and the others, determined to
reach them before Menas did. By this time Osiris was well aware that Menas was
capable of much more than he had ever imagined.
Thoth had waited patiently while Osiris had headed after
Menas. Anubis had regained his strength and Isis was conscious again and the
three were talking nervously. There was one name that dominated the discussion
and Isis was the most fervent to use it.
“I was right all along!” she cried. “Menas is the culprit.
I will never forgive him for what he did to Charmian. I will never forgive
myself for faltering. The monster had his wicked way!”
She burst into tears and Thoth did his best to comfort her.
He and Anubis were finding it difficult to deal with their sister’s eventual
death but resorted to a firm and unflinching stance, lest they be needed to aid
Osiris.
“What we can do is avenge Charmian,” assured Thoth, putting
his arm around Isis. “Osiris will make sure that Menas pays for this.”
At that moment they heard someone outside the door. The
door then opened and Osiris ran in, wheezing profoundly. He needed a few
seconds to catch his breath before he spoke.
“Thank Ra! I got here before Menas!” he cried in relief. “I
was certain that he would have reached you first. We must hurry. Menas is
casting spells around the Citadel. It is no longer safe to be here. We must
make our escape and fast.”
“Where is Menas?” asked Isis.
“In the east wing of the White Citadel,” replied Osiris.
“Come on, we have absolutely no time to loose.”
Thoth picked up Charmian and they followed Osiris out of
the room. Osiris raced down the corridors that lead to the main entrance hall,
the others keeping close behind him.
“What about Armon?” asked Anubis. “Despite how we feel
about him we can’t just leave him behind.”
“That fool!” exclaimed Osiris. “Let him rot where he is.
The coward was never up to this in the first place. I would have been better
off acting alone.”
The others stopped dead in their tracks. They stared at
Osiris. There was something peculiar about what he had just said. His tone was
very unusual. Isis stepped forward and cautiously addressed him.
“What do you mean Osiris?”
“I meant that Armon never took his position seriously,”
said Osiris, coughing. “I made him chief messenger after all. If he has decided
to side with Menas then that is his choice and we have no reason to spare him.
No doubt that Menas will rescue him.”
“But is Menas safe to be left in the Citael? And we cannot
leave our children at his mercy. What did you mean by ‘acting alone’?”
“Questions! Questions! Forever questions! Don’t you know
when to give up you infuriating female!”
Osiris turned around and struck Isis hard across the face.
She fell back whimpering. Thoth ran to help her while Anubis looked at Osiris
in amazement.
“Osiris! Explain yourself! Are you mad? What has Menas done
to your mind?”
“I do not need to explain myself to anyone, least of all
you!”
Osiris raised his hands and let loose a spark of energy in
Anubis’s direction. He sprawled over in pain. Thoth stood up and raced towards
his older brother.
“What in Ra’s name are you doing Osiris? You must be have
been driven insane!”
“No! Only frustrated with those who regard themselves as
the font of wisdom, like you!”
Thoth was then also knocked over with a blast from Osiris’s
hands. Isis looked at her husband. It was then that she noticed his eyes. They
were not sky blue, as she knew them, but a horrible dark purple.
“You’re not Osiris! Menas! What have you done with Osiris?”
“He is too far away to be of any help to you now. The time
has come when you and your siblings must yield and be ultimately destroyed by
me! Too long have you tarried these halls, mocking my influence!”
The faux Osiris then revealed the intimidating Dark Destiny
and raised it above his head. He then brought it down with all his vigour,
aimed straight at Isis’s helpless head. Before it reached her the Dark Destiny
was hit by a force that knocked it out of the hands of its wielder.
“What!”
He looked around to see the real Osiris standing a few feet
away. The spurious Osiris cowered back, glaring at his opponent.
“You cannot keep me from my destiny Osiris!”
The false Osiris raised his hand and summoned the Dark
Destiny to it. The sinister sword flew through the air towards its master. But
before it reached his hand, a bolt of bright energy collided with it. The dark
weapon began to glow as it had done so not long before. Then it vanished from
sight. The impostor’s jaw dropped. He looked up and saw that Osiris had the
Supernova pointed directly between his eyes. The counterfeit Osiris disappeared
to be replaced by the cowering form of Menas.
“Surrender! Now!”
Menas looked about hysterically, searching for some way to
outwit them all. There was no loophole through which he could escape. He hung
his head and reluctantly nodded. The other’s stared at him with expressions of
anger and disgust.
“Very well brother. You have truly defeated me. I will
never fight you again,” agreed Menas, extending his hand to Osiris. “Can we
forgive and forget?”
“It’s a bit late for that!” exclaimed Thoth. “After all you
have done. How dare you!”
“I don’t think so Menas,” answered Osiris. “I do not think
that there is even a chance that any of us can ever forgive you. We all loved
and trusted you and you hurt us in the worst possible way. Come on, get up!”
Osiris walked over to Menas and pulled him up by his neck.
At that moment Menas grabbed the Supernova from Osiris’s waist. He jumped up
and pointed it at his siblings with a triumphant look on his face.
“Your hesitation has made you foolish Osiris,” he laughed.
“Now I have the Supernova, you are all doomed!”
“I’m sorry Menas but it is you who are doomed, not us,”
said Osiris flatly. “Don’t you realise what this sword is?”
“He does now,” spoke the familiar voice from the Supernova,
to which Menas looked down in horror.
“You!” he cried. “But that is not possible!”
He tried to cast the Supernova aside but his hands were firmly
attached to the hilt, sealed by some unstoppable force that bound his hands to
his destiny, a force he could not master or deceive.
“Menas, son of Ra, and brother of King Osiris,” decreed the
Supernova. “For your heinous crimes against the Spirit World you are henceforth
banished for all eternity. You may join your sword in the Demon Realm. Be
gone.”
Menas began to glow like the Dark Destiny had done. He
became so bright that the others had to cover their faces again. Before Menas
faded away for good they all distinctively heard him cry out in desperation.
“This does not end here! I will have my revenge! You and
your heirs shall exist only in fear!”
Menas was gone and the light gradually subsided. The
Supernova shot to Osiris’s open hand.
“An honour to be of service my lord Osiris,” it said. “You
will never again have to defeat a villain such as he.”
Osiris looked at the others. They all looked relived and
exhausted. Isis ran to his arms and hugged him tightly.
“He has gone,” reassured Osiris. “He will never threaten us
again.”
