New York City, U.S.A. A city viewed by many as a haven for criminals and rogues. A city with this kind of reputation needs heroes. New York's got plenty of them. One of them is Doctor Stephen Strange, Earth's sorcerer supreme. He was sitting in his house on Bleecker Street sipping a cup of tea in his Sanctum Sanctorum when he heard a voice outside. "Hey Doc!" it said, "I need to talk to you." Doctor Strange hovered over to the window and looked out. On the lawn was Spiderman.
"Ah Spiderman, what brings you here?" Doctor Strange asked, running a hand through his greying black hair.
"Well Doc, I've been seeing this strange vision in my head at night," Spiderman began.
"Oh? Tell me more," Doctor Strange said, leaning forward.
"Well, I'm heading up to Egypt to look at one of the pyramids when suddenly I hear a voice commanding me to go away 'lest I disturb the slumber of Mumm-Ra,'" Spiderman explained.
"I think, then that a trip to Egypt is in order. But I believe that we need to do some research on this Mumm-Ra first," Doctor Strange said.
The pair spent the better part of two hours poring through various tomes and texts before finally Spiderman found an obscure reference. "It says something about for every force of evil there is a force of good who can defeat it. Then it goes on to list several examples. For Mumm-Ra it says there is someone called the Thundercat," Spiderman said.
"Very odd. I shall have to perform a powerful summoning spell. I'm not sure if we'll be taken to him or vice versa. Hold on tight," Doctor Strange said, beginning a slow chant.
The Thundercats sat around their large conference table. "Mumm-Ra's been inactive lately. We've dealt with the Lunataks, although I suspect their exile won't last long. The mutants are still licking their wounds after the Illara fiasco," Tygra said.
"But Mumm-Ra was drained in that battle too," Cheetara said.
"True. But you're forgetting that Mumm-Ra's power does not come from himself, but from the Ancient Spirits of Evil. They could easily recharge him," Lion-O said.
"Snarf, snarf. It looks like there's one heck of a storm coming our way!" Snarf said.
"We're being pulled into the portal!" Spiderman cried, as his feet slid from underneath him.
"Patience Spiderman. We'll arrive safely," Doctor Strange said, trying hard to convince himself of that fact. Soon the portal widened and sucked the two in completely, before snapping shut.
Back at Cat's Lair the Thundercats were startled to see two unknown people pop into existence before them. "Look out Lion-O, snarf, snarf," Snarf said.
"I see them Snarf. Who are you?" Lion-O demanded.
"Forget about who they are. They must be agents of Mumm-Ra to appear out of nowhere like that!" Wily Kat said, producing a handful of explosive pellets from his pocket.
"No Wily Kat! Don't!" Wily Kit shouted, but it was too late. The explosives flew through the air detonating around both Doctor Strange and Spiderman.
"Why you little munchkin. I'll teach you some manners," Spiderman said, a thin strand of web fluid tangling the Thunderkitten.
"Wily Kat! Come on Thunderans let's show these two interlopers what we Thundercats are made of!" Wily Kit said.
"Thundercats?" Doctor Strange thought, "Perhaps we were looking for a group rather than an individual. Our best bet is to neutralize them and hope for the best."
Spiderman felt a bola whip catch around his wrist and pulled tightly on it, sending Tygra flying into the far wall. This seemed too easy. Upon seeing a man with a sword Spiderman sent another batch of web fluid at the sword holder. "Three down four to go. You're really lagging Doc," Spiderman said.
"Save your energy for combat Spiderman. Egotism can be your worst enemy," Doctor Strange cautioned. "Now. A simple spell to hold them in place. Cytorak, grant me your powers across the mystic planes to ensnare these creatures!" Strength flowed through Doctor Strange's hands as bands of red energy shot out encircling each remaining Thundercat. The bands of Cytorak were designed to hold the target in place but allowed for communication. "Now that that's over with. We need to talk," he said.
"Talking time is over evil doer," came a voice from the doorway. Spiderman and Doctor Strange turned around. "Funny. My spider sense didn't tingle. Maybe this dimension is affecting it," Spiderman said as he took in the five new cat creatures. "It's not this dimension. They're illusions!" Doctor Strange said before tumbling in agony.
"Doctor Strange!" Spiderman shouted, moving toward his friend.
"Thundercats, ho!" Lion-O said, the Sword of Omens dispelling the threads that held him. "Good work Cheetara. You've disabled one of them with your telepathic bolts."
"Is that all they are? Easily remedied then," Doctor Strange grunted, putting up more mental barriers. "Now then. I'll simply tie you up again and we'll talk."
Doctor Strange and Spiderman explained to their prisoners why they had come and assured them that they were on their side. When the Thundercats had agreed not to attack again Doctor Strange removed the bands holding them and motioned to the table.
"I don't understand this. Mumm-Ra has always been a problem for us, as far back as we can remember," Cheetara said.
"Has he gained any new powers lately?" Doctor Strange asked.
"If anything he should be weakened. We recently battled another enemy of ours and he used a device that drained Mumm-Ra of his Ancient Spirit given energy," Lion-O replied.
"Perhaps, then, he has found something since that time that has made him even more powerful," Spiderman offered.
"I hope not. He's a force to be reckoned with as it is, snarf, snarf. If he's even more powerful..." Snarf began.
"Then we'd better deal with him right away," Lion-O finished.
Doctor Strange and Spiderman sat at one of consoles at Cat's Lair. Tygra had agreed to do some reconnaissance work while the two did some research. Behind them they could feel the watchful eyes of Panthro. "Amazing. This planet is Earth," Doctor Strange said.
"Is it some alternate Earth, or is it some futuristic Earth?" Spiderman asked.
"I can't be certain. My guess is that if you were affected by Mumm-Ra in our dimension, in our time line, then this must be several hundred years in the future. I could be wrong though. Some powers do cross dimensional voids, it's just that things crossing through time are more common," Doctor Strange said.
"I think that all went right over my head. Dimensional travel, mystic arts, ancient mummies, give me a bank robber over those any day and I'm happy as a clam," Spiderman said.
Tygra approached Mumm-Ra's pyramid while invisible. It was a great risk to him. He could still be caught by the evil sorcerer. The building loomed large in front of him. As the front door was sealed shut, Tygra was forced to scale the structure, making slow progress up the side. As he neared the top, he could hear Mumm-Ra talking to someone.
"You were brought here at great expense, do not fail me again. Lure the Thundercats to me and I will destroy them," Mumm-Ra said.
"Don't worry Mumm-Ra. We won't fail you," a high-pitched voice, which Tygra correctly identified as Luna's, said.
"See that you don't or else I might consider leaving you on Exile Island," Mumm-Ra said. Tygra backed away from the opening and contacted Cat's Lair.
"The Lunataks are on their way," Tygra said.
"Thanks for the information Tygra, we'll be ready. You head home," Lion-O said.
"Tygra over and out," Tygra said.
Doctor Strange and Spiderman were briefed on the Lunataks. Their powers and weaknesses. "Hmm. It would seem that we're going to have quite a situation on our hands," Doctor Strange said.
"Yes, and we'd better be ready for them. The Lunataks are not pushovers," Panthro said.
"We'll go out and meet them," Lion-O said.
"You two can ride in the Thundertank, Wily Kat and I will take our space boards," Wily Kit added.
"That won't be necessary. We have other means of transportation," Doctor Strange said.
The Thundertank rumbled out of Cat's Lair, attempting to intercept the Lunataks. Spiderman swung through the trees, keeping up easily, and hung onto the top of the tank when there were none. Doctor Strange kept pace, levitating along side them.
"This is so weird. I've never seen anything like those two," Wily Kat said.
"I know, and the way they beat us so handily creeps me out," Wily Kit added.
"Come now. We've met strange people everywhere we've been. Look at the Berbils and the Wollos," Cheetara said.
"Besides, they probably think we look weird," Lion-O pointed out.
"Us? Look weird? But we're normal!" Wily Kat argued.
"To us we do look normal, Wily Kat, but to them we don't," Wily Kit said.
"I just hope that spider guy doesn't get the top of my Thundertank all sticky. I just cleaned it this morning," Panthro grumbled.
"Well Doc, what's the plan?" Spiderman asked.
"We'll stick with them for now. We've got nothing better to do anyway. The tome you read indicated that Mumm-Ra has his opposite. If the Thundercats are that opposite then who are we to complain and argue about it," Doctor Strange replied.
"But we're so much better than them. We beat them without breaking a sweat. Surely this Mumm-Ra can't be any harder," Spiderman quipped. Doctor Strange opted not to reply.
The Thundercats and their two new friends made good time through the forest and met the Lunataks sooner than they'd expected. Tygra soon appeared beside the Thundertank as the others emerged.
"Come on Amok, we don't need Mumm-Ra to defeat the Thundercats!" Luna shrieked.
"But Luna, who are those two people with them?" Alluro asked.
"Kill them first and find out later," Chilla hissed.
"Stop talking and attack!" Luna said.
Doctor Strange eyed the gathering of evil doers and picked out his targets. Chilla and Knave. Beside him he saw Spiderman making his way toward Amok, the strongest of the Lunataks. The Thundercats dispersed amongst the remaining villains.
"Cheetara, it is hopeless to resist me. We've battled before and you haven't won. Why bother even trying?" Alluro asked, beguiling the female Thundercat. Cheetara did try to resist his hypnotic powers, she had even been somewhat prepared for them. But she found herself grudgingly admitting that he was right. They had battled and often she would fall under his spell. Perhaps it was pointless to even bother trying. She fell to her knees and relinquished her staff to the Lunatak.
"Cheetara, no!" Tygra shouted, running forward. A massive hand clamped around his shoulder and yanked him backwards. Soon Red Eye stood over him, his chest plate beginning to whine as a missile prepared to fire. Only one chance. Tygra slid between Red Eye's legs and pushed the Lunatak to the ground. The missile couldn't be stopped and exploded at ground zero, wounding the villain.
"Hold still you impetuous brats!" Tug Mug said, firing his gravity carbine at the Thunderkittens.
"Not a chance, Tug Mug," Wily Kit said.
"If you want us to stop, you'll have to hit us," Wily Kat offered.
"I'm trying!" Tug Mug said, squinting as a pellet exploded near him, blinding him for the moment. The two youngsters used this momentary distraction to their advantage, flying through the air and colliding, feet first, with his head.
"Spiderman hasn't had to face Luna and Amok before," Lion-O thought, "They're the biggest threat. I'd better go help him." With his Sword of Omens fully extended he shouted "Ho!" and sent a blast of energy into Amok's chest.
Spiderman swung low and scooped Luna off of Amok's back. "Let me go!" Luna shrieked, wriggling in Spiderman's hands.
"I wouldn't do that. I might just drop you. Do you really want that overgrown lug to try and catch you?" Spiderman asked. Luna growled and smacked her captor in the face with her riding crop. "Hey. Don't you know children shouldn't play with such nasty toys?" Spiderman asked, taking away the riding crop.
Doctor Strange looked at the frost maiden and her half brother Knave. Their icy breath was certainly a force to reckon with but he had done his research and had a few tricks of his own. "I'll ice you yet," Chilla hissed.
"Maybe. But if I suspect you'll be far less effective in a moment," Doctor Strange said. "Flames of Faltine, cross through space and time to do my bidding."
Chilla didn't like the sound of that phrase. While she hadn't seen this man fight before she knew that many creatures possessed magical powers. If she could manipulate ice then why couldn't this man create fire?
Flame sprouted in a nice circle around the pair, slowly it began to close in on them, forcing them to stand back to back. As it got closer and closer the two Lunataks could feel their strength giving out and soon Knave followed by Chilla had fallen to the ground.
Spiderman used his web fluid to attach Luna to a tree before joining the Lord of the Thundercats in attacking Amok. The big creature seemed in a panic. It wanted to rescue Luna but also had to contend with two enemies. It growled and swung a fist at Spiderman, the one who had taken Luna away from him. But this left him open to an attack from Lion-O's Sword of Omens. When he tried and knock the sword away he found a fist crashing into his side, doubtless breaking a few ribs. After a few more such attacks Amok soon tumbled to the ground.
"See Cheetara. You have lost. None of your friends can help you," Alluro said calmly.
"None of us?" Tygra inquired, grabbing Alluro by the hair.
"That's right Tygra. Not even you. You are too weak even to stand, how can you possibly help Cheetara?" Alluro asked.
"You're right. I do feel weak. Maybe I should just sit down for now. Deal with you later," Tygra said, sitting.
"Ho!" Lion-O shouted, from a short distance away. Alluro knew what that meant. He'd have to make a new crystal for his psyche club. True to form Lion-O had blasted the crystal that helped hold the two Thundercats in thrall. Alluro decided to surrender to the superior numbers.
"Well, that leaves just Mumm-Ra. What should we do with them?" Spiderman asked.
"We'll leave them here and come back for them on the way home," Lion-O said, "We have more pressing things to contend with."
Mumm-Ra watched the battle from his pool. The introduction of Spiderman and Doctor Strange posed an interesting problem. He could have dealt with the Thundercats by themselves. Now? Well, he'd have to try.
The door to Mumm-Ra's pyramid was easily opened for one possessing superior strength. Spiderman tossed the door aside and motioned the others to enter. Doctor Strange and Lion-O took the lead.
A large stone slab fell in place behind the front pair, sealing the others outside. "So, you have finally come to meet Mumm-Ra, the ever living!" a booming voice said.
"That's right Mumm-Ra. We've come to defeat you once and for all," Lion-O said, drawing the Sword of Omens.
"May the Eye of Agamotto reveal the source of Mumm-Ra's new power!" Doctor Strange chanted softly. From around his neck the Eye of Agamotto, a powerful artifact, began to glow, shining a light that only the sorcerer could see, onto Mumm-Ra's sarcophagus.
"I can't lift it. Blue guy, come here and give me a hand," Spiderman said. Panthro's eyes narrowed slightly, but he came over anyway. Despite their combined strength the stone slab wouldn't move. "I hope they're okay in there, snarf, snarf," Snarf whined.
Doctor Strange watched as Lion-O and Mumm-Ra did battle. He threw his own spells in now and again, but mostly concentrated on moving over to where Mumm-Ra's sarcophagus lay. Just as he'd hoped he saw an artifact of evil laying on the ground. While he didn't have time to study it, he suspected that by removing it from the sarcophagus he could prevent Mumm-Ra from accessing its powers.
Lion-O was amazed as he engaged Mumm-Ra in a test of strength. He had fallen to one knee and was desperately trying to hold off the evil entity. Suddenly Mumm-Ra cried out in pain and agony. He tried to turn and stop Doctor Strange but Lion-O clung onto his hands. "No! Give that back!" Mumm-Ra shouted.
"You won't need it in a moment," Lion-O growled. He flipped Mumm-Ra over his shoulder and produced the Sword of Omens once more. "Ho!" he shouted, causing the mummy to fly backwards into his open sarcophagus. "Now, Doctor Strange, seal it!" Lion-O ordered. The sorcerer supreme obeyed at once, placing powerful spells around the edges of the lid. "There. He won't be able to get out," Doctor Strange said.
On the way home the Thundercats were startled to find that the Lunataks had somehow escaped. "I'm sure we'll be seeing them again," Lion-O said.
"Which brings up a point. Spiderman and I must return to our home," Doctor Strange said.
"Then I guess it's farewell, for now," Tygra said, clasping hands with Spiderman. Similar sentiments were expressed by the rest of the Thundercats.
"Then let the Eye of Agamotto guide us home!" Doctor Strange intoned. In seconds the forest of Third Earth faded and Doctor Strange's sitting room appeared.
"Well Doc. As much fun as this has been, I think I'd better head home. It's getting late and I'm quite tired," Spiderman said.
"Good night and pleasant dreams then," Doctor Strange said.
